Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's Relationship Timeline Is Full of Ups and Downs
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have gone through so much together over the years, from breakup rumors to cheating allegations. Despite all of the speculation about their relationship, the actors have managed to remain married for over two decades. Since they've been together for so long, fans were shocked to learn that the pair quietly separated in 2016.
On Oct. 11, "Today" shared a clip from Jada's NBC News special, in which she revealed that she and Will have "been living separate lives" for the past seven years, though they haven't legally divorced. "By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying," she said. Jada explained that neither of them had publicly spoken about their split until now because they were "still trying to figure out" where they stood as partners.
Jada later clarified that despite their separation, the two are still "working hard" to repair their relationship. "There's no finding another great love, and I think that's the point," she told "Today" on Oct. 16 after her special aired. "It's like we are in a place now that we are in a deep, healing space. And we are really concentrating on healing the relationship between us. There's no divorce on paper. We really have been working hard. That's the whole thing. We are working very hard at bringing our relationship together. Back to a life partnership."
Two days prior to Jada's latest comments, The New York Times published a statement from Will in which he responded to newly surfaced revelations from her "Worthy" memoir (out on Oct. 17), noting that it "kind of woke him up." "When you've been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties," he wrote.
Since 2016, Will and Jada have attended several red carpet events together along with their children, Jaden and Willow Smith. Most recently, Jada stood by Will after he was criticized for slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. She's also used her book tour to clarify a few misconceptions about her marriage with Will, including the "false narrative" that surrounded her infamous "entanglement" with singer August Alsina.

During an October 2018 episode of "Red Table Talk," Will recalled meeting Jada for the first time. "It was a really unique, beautiful power," he said of their first conversation. "We had that moment. We connected, but I was married and that was it," he said. At the time, the "Independence Day" star was married to actor and producer Sheree Zampino, who is the mother of his oldest son, Trey Smith.
Jada made it clear that she and Will "did not have an affair while he was married." However, their meeting caused the "Bad Boys" actor to question everything. "I had a realization that I wasn't with the person I was supposed to be with," he said on "Red Table Talk."

The moment was so "unplanned" that Will didn't have a ring for Jada, but that didn't deter her from accepting his proposal. "She said yes," Will said. "It's really weird when you live the kind of lifestyle that we live: simplicity becomes the jewel."

I'm here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that's not for me to do for him, or vice versa."
Since some fans took Jada's comments as confirmation the couple was in an open marriage, the actor released a lengthy follow-up statement on Facebook (via E! News) clarifying her comments. "Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...this means we have a GROWN one," her message read.

"So many people have extended me their 'deepest condolences' that I figured - 'What the hell... I can be foolish, too!'" he wrote. "So, in the interest of redundant, repetitious, over & over-again-ness... Jada and I are... NOT GETTING A DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!! : -)."
The "Men In Black" star called Jada his "Queen" and told fans that if he and Jada were ever really getting divorced, the news would come directly from him.

Will told Rock after slapping him across the face.
That July, Will apologized to Rock for his "unacceptable" behavior in a YouTube video.
October 2023: Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals She and Will Smith Separated in 2016
Ahead of the release of her memoir "Worthy," Jada appeared on "Today" to discuss one of her book's most shocking revelations: she and Will have been separated since 2016. The actor said the pair kept their split a secret for so long because they weren't ready to let the public know. "[We were] still trying to figure out, between the two of us, how to be in partnership," she said. "In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out."
When she was asked what led to their breakup, Jada said that it was "a lot of things." "By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying," she said. "I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."
Although Will and Jada are separated, the actor said the pair haven't legally gotten a divorce since they promised to "work through whatever." After her "Today" comments made headlines, Jada returned to the show to clarify that she and Will are in the process of fixing their marriage. "Here's the thing about husband-wife marriage for me, for my healing process. I came into that with very specific ideas that were blocks to me seeing Will as who he is," she said. "He can't be this perfect, ideal guy husband. I have to be able to accept him for the human that he is, (and) he accepts me for the human that I am. And we want to love each other there."
On her episode of "Let's Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa," Jada cleared up a few things about her 2020 "Red Table Talk" sit-down with Will, in which they discussed her "entanglement." According to her, they actually came prepared to reveal their separation then, but she realized Will wasn't ready to make it known to the world yet. "He was like, 'I really don't want you to do this alone.' And I think the misconception was that I asked Will to come to the table," she told host Ripa, per a preview of the Oct. 18 episode shared with POPSUGAR. "That just wasn't the case. You can't force Will to do anything, OK?"
She continued, ". . . I think that once he came to the table, what everyone got to see, which was really interesting, and I didn't even know it in present time of how deeply I recognize it now, but the dynamic between us, I started to see him get uncomfortable. I started to see that he was not ready, and my codependency kicked right in. And I was like, I am going to make sure you are good by any means necessary, even if that means taking on the false narrative that I've been the adulterous wife."
Jada added that she "came to that table prepared to let go of a certain persona of myself and a persona of my relationship." ". . . I'm not gonna backstep on me needing this for myself. I want out of this handmade golden cage that I created for myself. And at the same time, how do I help take care of someone who's actually not ready for that
part of the journey?"
"My codependency was like, well, do what you usually do and just take it all on," she continued. ". . . Just take it on the chin. You do it well . . . So that's what I did."
